Spring City, Utah
A 170-year-old pioneer village tucked against the Wasatch Plateau, where oolite-stone homes, working artist studios, and small-town Main Street have barely changed in a century - and where you can still spend the night in one of them.
A living pioneer town, not a recreation of one
Spring City was settled in 1852 by Mormon pioneers and Danish and Scandinavian immigrants who built it out of adobe, log, and locally quarried oolite limestone. Because the town's population declined for most of the 1900s, nobody ever tore the old buildings down to put up something new - so the whole town, all 95-some blocks of it, is now a National Register Historic District. Today it's home to about a thousand people, a cluster of working artist studios, two beloved small restaurants, and a handful of restored pioneer homes you can actually rent for the night.

A town artists never left
By the 1970s, potter Joseph Bennion and a wave of painters, furniture-makers, and craftspeople had discovered Spring City's quiet Main Street and its remarkable stock of untouched pioneer architecture. They stayed, and more followed. Today the town Forbes once called one of "America's Prettiest Towns" is a genuine, working artist community - galleries and studios sit inside the same 1870s adobe and limestone homes their original owners built by hand.
It's an easy, uncrowded day trip from Salt Lake City (about 100 miles) or Provo (about an hour), and a natural stop on the way to Manti, Ephraim, and the Skyline Drive scenic byway along the Wasatch Plateau.
